Historic Preservation

The metro New Orleans region offers many opportunities to preserve our historic structures. With over $50 million in local, historic restoration and renovation projects, clients can rely upon McDonnel for the unique construction services necessary to preserve our cherished heritage and culture.

Whether rehabilitating a deteriorated structure or repurposing a historic property, we have the expertise to navigate zoning ordinances, building codes, and tax credit incentives specific to historic restoration projects. McDonnel also has experience collaborating with preservation-focused agencies such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Louisiana Office of Historic Preservation, and the Vieux Carre Commission.

McDonnel has assisted with the preparation of Historic Preservation Certification Application documents required by the Nation Park Service. These documents include:

Part 1 Evaluation of Significance, Part 2 Description of Rehabilitation, and Part 3 Request for Certification of Completed Work. McDonnel works closely with the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development’s Division of Historic Preservation to obtain approval of the credits.

We have worked with several clients including the Joy Theater, New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA), and Circle Foods Store to obtain historic tax credits on their projects. The owner and well-known developer of the Circle Foods Store project chose McDonnel as the general contractor specifically because of our historic tax credit experience.
