Blast Resistant Structures

Blast-Resistant Structure Construction for Industrial Facilities

In high-risk industrial environments, blast-resistant structures require more than a builder. They require a construction partner who understands active facilities, specialized coordination, and the importance of getting every detail right. They understand the criteria for guiding design and how to clearly communicate the right information from planning through construction.

The McDonnel Group is a solutions-oriented general contractor guiding industrial owners and EPCs across the Gulf South through the construction of blast-resistant structures with clarity, discipline, and control.

Why Clients Choose McDonnel

Industrial operators choose McDonnel because blast-resistant structure construction leaves no room for misalignment. These projects often involve specialized design requirements, strict site controls, sensitive operations, and multiple stakeholders working within or near active facilities.

Our role is to bring control to the construction process, coordinating closely with owners, engineers, EPCs, trade partners, and facility teams so the work is planned thoroughly, executed safely, and delivered with confidence.

Blast-Resistant Structure Experience

Much of our work is confidential. Below are anonymous descriptions of some of our experience with industrial blast-resistant structures.

Blast-Resistant Operations Building for Major Gulf Coast Industrial Site

McDonnel is constructing a large, multi-function industrial building designed to consolidate office, control room, warehouse, and laboratory functions into one location. The structure includes a pile-supported foundation, conventional steel framing, concrete tilt-up wall panels, curtain wall systems, and a blast-rated design. The project reflects McDonnel’s ability to coordinate complex industrial building programs where multiple operational teams, building systems, and safety requirements must come together in one controlled environment.

Blast-Proof Packaging and Support Facility Within an Active Plant

McDonnel delivered a blast-proof industrial building within an active manufacturing environment, coordinating offices, cleanrooms, production support space, and tie-ins to active product lines. The project required careful coordination with the owner, vendors, subcontractors, and outside trades to support the installation of specialized packaging equipment, including wiring, safety controls, fire protection, and utility connections. McDonnel sequenced the work around timed shutdowns and turnovers to minimize disruption to ongoing plant operations.

Blast-Resistant Central Control Room and Lab Facility

For a major industrial expansion, McDonnel delivered a blast-resistant facility housing control room operations, laboratories, offices, locker rooms, and raised access floor systems. The scope included extensive site infrastructure, a transformer yard, backup generator, mechanical yard, pipe racks, driveways, sidewalks, loading ramps, and parking. The project required integration of owner power and operational requirements, including clean agent suppression, cable tray supports, bus ducts, lab infrastructure, and structural steel designed to support electrical systems.

Modular Multi-Hazard Resistant Comfort Station

McDonnel constructed a modular, blast-resistant comfort station for a Gulf Coast refinery environment. The building was designed to withstand multiple industrial hazards, including blast, fire, fragments, toxic gas, and extreme weather. McDonnel coordinated the assembly and installation of modular building components, helping refine the packaging and installation approach to improve field execution. The completed facility included offices, locker rooms, permit space, break areas, and restrooms to support personnel working in a high-risk industrial setting.

Types of Industrial Blast-Resistant Structures

McDonnel supports the construction of industrial facilities such as:

Built for Gulf Coast Industrial Environments

From petrochemical and refining facilities to LNG, manufacturing, energy, and heavy industrial sites, McDonnel understands the complexity of building where safety, access, sequencing, and schedule all matter.

When protection, uptime, and quality are critical, McDonnel brings clarity to the plan, discipline to the build, and confidence to the outcome.
