St. Margaret’s Daughters Home at Mercy is a new 4-story, 115,156 SF, 116-bed skilled nursing facility, formerly the Lindy Boggs Medical Office Buildings. The existing buildings were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and had remained closed since the storm. The new facility contains 100 resident rooms that were broken up into six separate “households”, each with their own unique look and feel. In order to make residents feel as at home as possible, a variety of design components were incorporated including:
Different interior finishes adorn the six households so each has its own personality
Each household has a community “country kitchen” fully stocked with appliances and pantry space for residents who enjoy cooking, community meeting area with fireplace, dining room, and separate laundry facilities
Fully staffed 2,000 SF main kitchen to prepare meals to be served in each household’s community dining room
Amenities including a convenience store, community wellness center, activity rooms, hair salon, library, and chapel
Two large outdoor gardens and an open-air courtyard located in the center of the building
Another critical component of the facility includes an 18-resident household equipped with specialized technologies to foster maximum independence for individuals suffering from ALS, an incurable disease. Steve Gleason, former New Orleans Saints’ standout who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, along with his foundation, Team Gleason, partnered with St. Margaret’s to create and raise capital for only the second ALS skilled care residence in the U.S. “Team Gleason’s mission is to provide individuals with muscular diseases such as ALS with state of the art technology, equipment and services. This facility will not only provide them with this technology to give the residents an opportunity to live as independently as possible but this will give the residents purpose and added value to their lives.” says Gleason.
Team Gleason and St. Margaret’s worked with The McDonnel Group to incorporate as much of the technology and design as possible into the construction schedule. The unit includes a team of staff specially trained to care for residents with ALS-MS and PEAC Technology – a cutting edge system that allows residents to control doors, lights, television, shades, and HVAC through sensitive technologies.
